The Password Matrix is Broken.

So, for years we had a Matrix combination to help kids choose a password. This helped the teachers so that they could easily prompt them when they invariably forgot, and it worked pretty well. Not so much now. Esp. for some 8th graders.

5 Steps for a More
Secure Student Password
Suggested by our HCPSS Data Architect & Security Manager

Password Directions:
To create a new password, you're going to choose a random 2 word combination with at least one word capitalized, and adding a special character and a number - for example: sillyDoor#5
(But don't use this one! LOL)

1. Have students go to Random Adjective List Generator
Have students click on the Blue REFRESH button to get another list
Pick 1 adjective that's easy for you to remember and spell

2. Have students go to Random Noun List GeneratorPick 1 noun

Have students click on the Blue REFRESH button to get another list
Pick 1 noun that's easy for you to remember and spell

3. Combine the 2 words -BONUS: if they make you laugh, it's even better to remember!
EX: fancypenguin

4. Make a letter in the combo a capital letter: EX: fancyPenguin

5. Add a symbol and number at the end, beginning, or in the middle EX: fancy$Penguin5 or EX: fancyPenguin#5

Going to How Secure is my Password testing reveals that

It would take a computer about

204 million years

to crack your password

COOL FACT: At any time you can change your password:
Go to hcpss.me and select Change Password at the bottom
Students will need to add: @inst.hcpss.org after their username

OLD & Outdated.

BEFORE you go to the trouble of resetting - double check that the kid is using the right login jog their memory by
reminding them of our password matrix! What did they choose? See below & what last 4 digits of their student ID Number?

How to Reset a Student Password

- or get one for a New Student!
Login with your Active Directory network login & the below link will only work on the HCPSS network
-------->> https://secure.hcpss.org/accounts
Really important! After you reset a student password you MUST WAIT
at least 1 hour for it to initialize with the HCPSS servers before using.

If that doesn't strike a bell then reset the passwords following the directions below: NOTE: Students will NOT be able to use the same password twice.
They must change the password to something different the 2nd time, easiest solution - have them choose a different FOOD.
(UPDATE: 2015-16 We have a NEW Menu! - Need the old one? See bottom of page)

In a pinch & just need the kid to get to the Internet for research? But printing & MS Office MAY NOT work in Guest Logins

Guest Login

Login: hcpssguest
Password: hcpss

Password GAfE Slideshow

Also, with the Macbook Pro Science Mobile Lab - NO LOGIN will work until the orange light goes away - this indicates it's connected wirelessly --takes about 40 seconds but feels like forever!

How to Reset or Establish a Student Password
This only works at school – Within Our Network – AKA Don’t Try at Home!

1. Go to https://secure.hcpss.org/accounts/

2. Teacher: Sign in with your Active Directory Network Account password (what you use to get into your laptop & email)

3. Type in the student name to be reset - It can be partial & either first or last! (Student login is confirmed here –first name initial, first 5 letters of last name and the last 4 digits of their student ID – this will never change)

4. Select the correct student then click RESET Password – It will ask "Are you sure you want to change the password?" Say Yes!

(It will then give you a temporary SHORT password – you will only use this ONCE – it activates the reset. This is not the real password – ie: Please don’t’ stop here!)

external image 20876744116_7b05df669c_z.jpg
5. Login with student login & the temporary reset password - A pop-up will prompt you or thestudent to create a new password. Please use the MHMS Password Matrix for this year (otherwise kiddos will pick an obscure or sometimes inappropriate password) It’s on the **MHMS Tech Wiki**.
Type the password twice, create an easy hint (ex. teal is a great color) and then click login. Wait 30-60 seconds. Voila!

Important Tips!

  • Ask the student to write new password down in their agenda book.
  • Students can NOT use the same password twice - must choose a New matrix option.
  • Passwords can sometimes take up to 12 hours (or overnight) to reset in the HCPSS computer system.
